How do YOU look at art?

Recently I was contacted by Ute Kreplin, PhD candidate at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK, about using one of my images for his online survey researching how people look at, and react to seeing artistic images.

I took the survey, which involves looking at images, and grading your first response in several categories. One of the images is a painting I created - you might recognize it.

I will be interested in the results of Ute's research. Wouldn't it be great for an artist to know what aspects of a painting appeal to the broadest range of viewers? This is especially valuable to beginning artists.

Of course, every viewer has their own interpretation of what makes a good painting. I have found that my own appreciation of different artistic styles has vastly expanded by studying art and art history.
However, ultimately, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

When you participate in Ute's survey, you will have to think about what you feel when viewing the art and I think that alone is an important reason to take the survey. Below is Ute's study:

Figurative Friday: "In His Corner"

In his corner all is well. A man content with his small piece of paradise, on the banks of a mighty river, quietly gazes at the early morning traffic on the shipping channel.Life is good.

Ideas for portrait/figures come at the most ordinary moments that somehow reveal the profound yet commonplace. I visit with Bill, my brother in law, and his family each summer in upstate NY and for years this image has etched its way into my painterly database. I asked his permission to take his photo while we both sat with our cups of coffee just enjoying the early peaceful morning together on his porch. He was generous enough, knowing that I wanted him for a portrait study and humored me when I abruptly said"...wait wait...please hold still, this is a painter's moment. Let me get the camera!"

I often wonder if similar moments took place in the lives of my favorite painters Sorolla, Vermeer, Sargent and Zorn. Except for the camera, of course.

I love painting people from life.

I know it has been a week since I posted. I have been painting...big things and little things.

But I also have been out playing in the dirt again, this time to remove invasive vinca vine that has been strangling everything else in my little garden. I am in desperate need of those guys in HGTV's Curb Appeal. Really. I am way too old for the bend and stoop thing anymore. I had to rub down with asper creme and have a stiff drink and retire before nine after working in the yard yesterday.

Joan, my blogger friend in Long Island, said it looks like I paint with ease yesterday, on her comments to my grandson's portrait. I gotta say painting for me at this point in life is much easier than gardening, which I also love. But it is not easy really...just passion and repetition and an intense desire to learn.

This is Emily again. The third time she has ever sat for us. She is amazing. Never tires or falls asleep, which I have seen happen ( have you?).
I began her in group, live, for four hours and then completed her after another four.

People are my favorite subject to paint..did I repeat myself?

I named this painting LADY G after Lady Gaga. It doesn't really look like her, but the flamboyant hair and outfit looks just like something you would see Lady Gaga wearing.

The painting has the everything plus the kitchen sink. Many different mediums, including gel "skins" for the facial features, and lots of texture.

This painting will replace the one I brought to Brushstrokes Gallery in Denver for the Artists of Colorado Show. The original painting, Canyon Colors, sold before the show opened. Woo-hoo!

I took this picture of myself holding the camera at arm's length. The Daily Paintworks challenge this week is to paint a quirky, unusual self portrait. I wanted to do one that was off center, cropped and very colorful.

I think I cropped it too close on the right side by cutting my eyeball in half. Oh well, it is what it is. I suppose some day when I'm gone, my kids will think this is great.

My husband said I took off 20 years - NOT TRUE! I have a pair of cool glasses. They are rimless, but are difficult to paint. They're there and yet,not there. I ran into those a couple times last year during my 100 portrait project.

I also think I used too much purple (can there be such a thing?) but I didn't want to redo the whole area around my eyes. The lenses in my glasses are actually purple on the EDGE, and that doesn't show well in the photo. They have to be viewed from just the right angle to see the purple edging.

Most of the time I prefer to work from life but with children,
a photo will do.
It is also possible to get really wonderful candids to work from,
since kids can be very wary of the invasive camera when asked to "sit".
I created this oil painting from a photo that I used
for a watercolor study last year.
See left. It took a year of looking and

more practice with color and children's faces to get to this stage.
This little piece took way longer than I would invest in an alla prima
but the subtlety required it and the layers of glazing as well.

I love painting people.

I love painting from life. Morgan is a regular model I use,(She never looks the same twice!) but this time her hair was the most prominent feature. It is very dark and was illuminated very slightly, mostly again by reflections bouncing off of her shirt. I had a view of her that was almost a profile.

This is one of those times that I search out, study and admire Velasquez and Sargent for....bringing form with minimum information out of a dark passage.

I only had a little more than three hours of the live sitting to get enough info to work towards finish at home. I did not have a camera...so I had to rely on memory this time.

This is a commissioned pet portrait. Roscoe looks like a happy guy. I had a good reference photo to work from with strong light and shadow.

I remember my portrait project from a year ago where I painted 100 portraits from photos I received by email. I had to stress over and over the importance of taking a photo with strong light coming from one side so there would be shadows across the face. I actually told people to go outside at dawn or sunset and take a picture with the sun lighting only one side of the face.

That's one of the reasons many professional portraits are boring. Flash, flash, flash. No shadows on the face. There is no reason to light up the entire face as if it were a mug shot or an object in an advertisement.

Dori's photo was one of the ones I selected to be part of my 100 PORTRAITS project about a year ago. Recently, I answered a call for entries by submitting this portrait to be in Randy Higbee Gallery's 6x6 INCH SQUARED competition.

I'm happy to say that this painting of Dori was chosen to be in the group of selected paintings from 1200 entries by artists around the country.

The exhibition will be at Randy Higbee Gallery in Costa Mesa, CA.
Dori lives in Orange County in Southern California, so she will be able to see her own portrait in the show. That is cool.

Dori beat out other entries I made of my granddaughter and husband!!

Another one of these faces that just come through!

I've decided to add a bit more info about what pigments I'm working with, and support information.

I worked with a limited palette here: let's see, raw umber, sap green, cerulean blue, white, my new quin red and a wee bit of primary yellow light. I think that's it. I discovered the other day, while ordering new paints online that a naples yellow could be mixed with raw umber, cad red, cad yellow, white. So I tried my own version since i wanted most of the colors in this painting to be pretty muted or desaturated, starting with her skin tone. I'm working on eliminating the cadmium red and yellow when i run out, and in anticipation, I'm trying out Grumbacher Red (Napthol) as a potential replacement for Cad red, and Primary Yellow Light to replace cadmium yellow. I'll let you know how it goes. Yes, they mix differently, so it will take some practice, but so far I am encouraged. I use watersoluble oils exclusively.

This was a breakthrough painting, not only is it in oils (which I haven’t been able to use in awhile due to allergies to linseed oil), but it’s textured oil which delights my soul to work with. And I used a reference photo of my mother at age 4, 1930, so of course it’s exceptionally dear.

A LONG DAY IN IRAQ By ANGELA UNGREN

The "Project"

On the easel is a 24x30 of the project. After a memorial service this summer, while the adults were talking and grieving, the kids were busy outside. When asked what they were doing they cheerfully replied "the project". Using wonderful kid imaginations they had gathered rocks, sticks, dirt, branches, banana peels, and assorted objects and built a sculpture on the sidewalk. Leave it to kids to demonstrate how life goes on. I snapped a photo on my cell phone and remembered it this week. It was a good "project" for me too. What are you up to?

I do not know the man in the photo. The photo was taken while I was attending school in Manhattan. One of my fellow students and I wandered the streets with our cameras during lunch breaks, looking for that magical moment to capture on film. (Yes we used film in those days). Anyway, I came across this picture today and I remembered the minute I shared with him. He saw the camera in my hand and said," take my picture girly". I think I replied something like, "I am looking for something memorable to shoot". He immediately took the cigerette from his mouth and put it in his ear. Many years later, I look at this photo and realize how "memorable" it is. All those small everyday interactions with each other that enrich our lives. Anyway thanks for reading!

In this portrait of an African child, there are several things going on. I like the over the shoulder pose with the whistfull, almost dreamy look of the child. Notice there are two obvious light sources - a golden light on the right side that is slightly behind the figure, and a cooler white light on the left, frontal side.
The warm reds of the robe are also reflected on the face. Careful observation of these subtle nuances of light are essential when looking at the reference material. I deliberately chose this tightly cropped composition because I wanted the face to be dominant in the smaller format.

These ladies are best friends. One of them asked me to paint this portrait of the two of them as a surprise gift for the other one. I agreed to do it, but now I think I should have declined.

I was working from a small photo and, as you can see, it was a flash photo with both of them looking directly into the camera. That is precisely the type of reference photo I dislike intensely. It makes a good photo, but a lousy portrait.

Right now, I'm going to say NEVER AGAIN. If you study the work of famous portrait artists, their work never looks like an ad for good dental checkups. These ladies have great smiles, but when I look at this painting, all I see is teeth. You would think, after my 100 portraits project, I would have known the pitfalls of painting this photo.
