Two Moons, a Northern Cheyenne, was one of three models James Earle Fraser used when he sculpted the indian head nickel. Two Moons was a survivor of the Little Big Horn. I was fascinated by the strength of character in his face and the hint of humor. I wish I knew what was the source of the humor, was it directed at himself or at the man taking his picture.

"Looking Back"
6x8 pastel and watercolor

I am always reading the lastest book on the Native Americans. The lastest is "Empire of the Summer Moon". I find myself studying their culture and wondering how our culture will be judged.

I have been reading "Empire of the Summer Moon and this face came to me as I read of the devastation of the individual Native American. There was a time when there were eleven million  of these men women and children living on this continent. Their individulal lose and our collective lose saddens me. The lose or change of any culture marks us all.
